Southampton University 1974-1977.
BSc (1st class Honours) Electronics Science.
Southampton University 1977-1981. PhD
Laser Physics. A novel laser resonator configuration later
commercialised for scientific and industrial applications by JK Lasers and
Spectron Laser systems. Now included in all standard texts on laser
design.
Experience
Smith Associates 1981-1983. As a
Principal Engineer, undertook electronics development and system analysis
for the MoD, including the development of major systems for multi-channel data
acquisition and display.
PA Technology 1983-1987.
Initially as a physicist in the applied physics group, later to became Senior
Consultant in the PA Group. Responsible for developing a wide range of
technologies, particularly those involving multi-disciplinary activities.
Major clients included Kodak, Pharmacia Biosensor, Lego/Modulex, Shell Ventures,
British Aerospace, IBM and the DTI.
Scientific Generics 1987-1991 as
Director of Innovation.
Followed the founder of PA Technology, Professor Gordon Edge CBE, as a founding
member of this Cambridge-based technology consultancy. Clients included
Esselte, Wharfedale, Domino Printing, Oxford Instruments and the DTI
Wharfedale PLC 1991-1992. As Technical
Director, led the R&D team and also undertook due diligence for certain
acquisitions. Supported City presentations to raise money in a Placing and
Open Offer. Merged the acquired and established technical teams which
produced 28 new audio products for launch in 1991.
Oxford Instruments 1992-1998.
As Engineering Manager of the Research Instruments Division, was
responsible for a team of 80 PhD-qualified engineers and design draughtspersons. Implemented structural change to reflect the changing
nature of the business environment, leading to a doubling in engineering productivity. Was responsible for a major IT investment
programme,
managing a transition to ISO9001 registration, and led Y2K team.

Enterprise 1998 to present. Founding director.
